COPA v Wright
From Satoshipedia, the Satoshi Mail encyclopedia
COPA v Wright was a case in the High Court of England and Wales in which the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA) asked the court to decide whether Craig Wright is Satoshi Nakamoto. The judge, Mr Justice Mellor, declared that Wright is not the author of the Bitcoin white paper, is not the person who adopted or operated under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto from 2008 to 2011, did not create the Bitcoin system, and is not the author of the initial versions of the Bitcoin software.[1]
The case
COPA's claim (IL-2021-000019) was heard together with a second claim, IL-2022-000069, which the judgment calls the BTC Core Claim, in the Intellectual Property List of the Business and Property Courts. The hearing ran on 22 days between 5 February and 14 March 2024, and the judge announced his four declarations at the close of the closing arguments.[1]
The written judgment, [2024] EWHC 1198 (Ch), was handed down on 20 May 2024. In it the judge said he was “entirely satisfied that Dr Wright lied to the Court extensively and repeatedly”, and that on whether Wright was Satoshi “the evidence was overwhelming”.[1]
Satoshi's correspondence as evidence
Witnesses who had corresponded with Satoshi gave evidence. Nicholas Bohm's statement exhibited his complete email exchange with Satoshi from 2009, which is now in Satoshi Mail.[2]
