Craig Wright

From Satoshipedia, the Satoshi Mail encyclopedia

Craig Wright is an Australian computer scientist who claimed from 2016 to be Satoshi Nakamoto. The High Court in London ruled in 2024 that he is not.[1]

The claim

In December 2015 Wired and Gizmodo suggested that Wright might be Satoshi.[2] On 2 May 2016 a post on his website associated him with Satoshi.[1] Gavin Andresen and Jon Matonis backed the claim; Jeff Garzik and Peter Todd disputed it.[2] In April 2019 he registered US copyrights in the white paper and the v0.1 code, and he sued people who accused him of lying about inventing Bitcoin.[1]

COPA v Wright

The Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA) sued Wright in London's High Court. After a five-week trial, Mr Justice Mellor ruled in March 2024 that Wright is not Satoshi Nakamoto. The written judgment, released on 20 May 2024, found that the documents he relied on were forgeries and that he had “lied to the Court extensively and repeatedly”.[1][3] See COPA v Wright for the case and the judgment, and Kleiman v. Wright for the earlier US case. In December 2024 he received a suspended prison sentence for contempt of court, for violating a court order related to his claims.[2]
